* Re “Nigeria Slowly Sheds Military Legacy,” April 1: To many Nigerians, nothing meaningful has changed since President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration came to office. Abject poverty and lack of adequate social services amid sanctioned corruption among the political elite have diminished the welcome changes advocated by ordinary Nigerians under oppressive military rule.

While the present government has tried to solve many problems facing the country, Obasanjo has failed miserably in redirecting his government against kleptomania. Freedom has been enhanced, but many of the anti-information law decrees under the previous military rulers are still in effect.

Similarly, the habitual wasteful spending by the legislature has called to question the sincerity of the present government. Obasanjo avoiding difficult issues will not serve the country well.
