Florence E. Shearer died Thursday at Camarillo Convalescent Hospital after a long illness. She was 97.

Shearer was born July 3, 1903, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and moved to California in 1919.

She met her future husband, John H. Shearer, in Los Angeles, and the couple married July 3, 1920. They moved to Ventura in 1957 when her husband retired.

She was a member of the Saticoy Congregational Church and president of the church guild for two years and taught Sunday school there.

As Saticoy School PTA president, she started the hot lunch program for students.

She was a member of the Ventura Order of the Easter Star Chapter 79 for more than 50 years and served as Worthy Matron in 1946. Three years later, she was Deputy Grand Matron of the State of California Order of the Eastern Star and was also a member and past president of the Past Matrons Club.

She is survived by a son, John of Westlake Village; a daughter, Norma Shearer of Camarillo; three grandsons; and nine great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no funeral service.

Interment will be private at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
