Sheila Meyers, president of the Orange County Board of Education, has announced her resignation effective May 7.

In a written statement Tuesday, Meyers, who works in the local retail industry and first joined the board in 1980, said she plans to move to Northern California after her upcoming marriage.

Meyers, 66, resigned from the board once before, in 1986, to move to her home state of Washington. She returned a year later and was appointed to complete the term of another board member who had died.

She was formally elected to the seat in 1988.

The board will appoint someone to the vacancy created by her resignation, the statement said.
