Strike Occurs Despite Government Retreat

A 24-hour general strike brought much of Greece to a standstill, with the government in disarray after it backed away from proposals to overhaul the nation’s sagging pension system.
The strike went ahead despite the Socialist government’s retreat late Wednesday from sweeping proposals it outlined last week, saying they were necessary to prevent many pension funds from going bankrupt.
Officials now say all options to reform the pension system are open for discussion.
