2 Postal Workers Split a $57-Million Jackpot

Two San Bernardino County postal workers who bought a lottery ticket while visiting San Diego won the $57-million jackpot in Wednesday night’s California lottery drawing.

The two friends, Ross Larsen and Rusty Cummings of Rialto, said they will quit their night shift jobs at a post office processing center.

“Hey, let someone else work the graveyard shift,” Cummings said, laughing, at a news conference Thursday.

The two men chose the cash-value option on the ticket, making it worth $28.5 million. After taxes, they each will take home about $10 million.

“I think I can live on that,” joked Larsen, 48.

Larsen and Cummings, in San Diego for a few days to visit friends, said they bought the quick-pick ticket at a 7-Eleven store Wednesday, as they do every Wednesday and Saturday.

“Then we were at the bowling alley last night and I checked the numbers,” Larsen said. “I checked at my friend’s house later that night and they all matched up.”

As Larsen spoke to reporters at the lottery district office, Cummings’ cellular phone rang with a call from a friend. Grinning, he said: “I know, it’s unbelievable. . . . It’s amazing.”

Cummings, who turns 49 today, and Larsen plan to take a trip to Australia with their winnings and give some money to their families.

Wednesday night’s winning numbers were 12, 22, 29, 37, 43 and the Mega Number was 7.
