Envoy Will Continue to Seek Access to Americans

The United States promised to keep a U.S. diplomat in Afghanistan to press for access to two detained American relief workers.

The diplomat, David Donahue, and two other Western diplomats were able to hand over bags of cookies, shaving gear and letters to officials of the ruling Taliban for delivery to eight detained foreign aid workers. Donahue’s Afghan visa expires Tuesday.

The two Americans, four Germans and two Australians are being held in Kabul, the capital, on charges of trying to convert Muslims to Christianity.

The Taliban said the diplomats should now monitor the case from Pakistan.
