A More Sweeping Act to Leave No Child Behind

Share

Re “No Child Left Behind? C’Mon,” Commentary, Dec. 13: I would like to make the distinction between President Bush’s “No Child Left Behind Act” [the education bill] and the Children’s Defense Fund’s “Act to Leave No Child Behind.” Public Allies Los Angeles is proud to partner with the Children’s Defense Fund in its movement to put children and youth first. The Children’s Defense Fund’s Act to Leave No Child Behind is a policy agenda that would improve all aspects of a child’s life: upgrading schools; providing access to health care and child care for all children; expanding nutrition programs so that no child ever goes hungry; providing support for families, including more affordable housing and increasing the minimum wage; and providing environmental protections for children in their homes, schools and communities.

These issues go hand in hand with our mission to create an environment where youth of diverse backgrounds have opportunities to practice leadership and strengthen communities.
