Taliban Orders Statues Destroyed
From Times Wire Reports
Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers ordered the destruction of all statues, including a pair of 5th century Buddhas carved out of a mountainside and towering more than 100 feet.
The order came from the Taliban’s supreme leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar, who issued an edict declaring statues insulting to Islam.
The ancient Buddhas are in Bamian, about 80 miles northwest of the capital, Kabul.
