Cleveland Throws Chatsworth for Loss, Its First in West Valley

Cleveland High handed Chatsworth, which had not lost a West Valley League game since City Section girls’ soccer began 13 years ago, a 3-2 setback on Wednesday at Cleveland.

Chatsworth, which has won 10 City championships, fell behind on first-half goals by Angie Veliz and Nichole Cordova.

Cleveland (8-5, 1-0 in league play) took a 3-0 lead on a penalty kick by Lyndsay Moss with about 20 minutes left.

Chatsworth (4-3-1, 0-1) scored twice on penalty kicks in the final 15 minutes.

Jenna Fodor of Chatsworth was yellow-carded for a foul in the first half and, about 15 minutes later, was red-carded and ejected.

The Chancellors defeated Cleveland by scores of 14-0 and 8-0 last season, Cleveland’s first in the upper division.

Goalie Sari Gelzer made seven saves for the Cavaliers.

Verdugo Hills 2, North Hollywood 1--Natalie Campos and Esther Gonzalez scored for the Dons (5-2-1, 1-0) in a Sunset Six League opener at Verdugo Hills.

Poly 5, Hollywood 0--Myra Ramirez and Lizette Garcia each scored two goals for the Parrots in a Sunset Six League game at Poly.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Quartz Hill 6, Antelope Valley 0--Eric Torres had his 11th shutout and the Rebels won a Golden League game at Quartz Hill.

David Martin had a goal and two assists for Quartz Hill (16-2, 2-0).

North Hollywood 3, Verdugo Hills 0--Carlos Aguilar, Baldwin Salazar and Edu Martinez scored for the Huskies (4-3-5) in a Sunset Six League opener.

Campbell Hall 2, Crossroads 1--Sean Turner scored from 15 yards in the 79th minute and the Vikings (6-2-1) rallied for a Delphic League victory at Crossroads.

Crespi 6, Alemany 0--David Vega scored twice in a Mission League game at Crespi (12-2, 3-0).

GIRLS’ WATER POL0

Harvard--Westlake 27, Louisville 5--Paloma Slezak and Courtney Quinn each scored eight goals for the Wolverines (8-3, 2-0) in a Mission League game at Louisville.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 71, Santa Monica 65--Nic Echevestre had 20 points for the Cougars (6-15, 1-2) in a Western State Conference Southern Division victory at Santa Monica.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CS Northridge def. La Verne, 32-30, 30-24, 30-15--Joe Nargi had 16 kills and the Matadors won their opener at Northridge.
