Cypress Knocks Off El Dorado

Cypress beat seventh-ranked El Dorado, 65-52, in an Empire League boys’ basketball game Friday at El Dorado.

Matt Reid was 12 for 16 from the free-throw line, finishing with a game-high 27 points. Josh Smith had 13 points and nine rebounds. Jon Uyloan added 14 points and five assists for the Centurions (12-9, 3-3).

Kyle Miller scored 14 points for El Dorado (18-4, 4-2). Mike Wulff scored 12 points before fouling out and David Patten finished with 11.

Cypress, which hit 21 of 27 free throws, extended a seven-point first-quarter edge into a 33-24 halftime lead.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 48, Orange 46--Brandon Rogers made a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to put host Santa Ana Valley (11-12, 3-3) up by five and deny Orange (1-21, 0-6) its first league victory. Martin Gonzalez had 14 points and Rogers finished with eight for the Falcons.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 45, Fullerton 42--Clay Carmody had 13 points and Michael Kintzle grabbed nine rebounds for host Sunny Hills (14-8, 3-3).

Valencia 54, Brea Olinda 53 (OT)--Kelnan Briggs scored the winning basket on a follow-up with 11 seconds left in overtime. Hugo Hernandez scored 13 points for Valencia (15-8, 4-2).

Brea Olinda’s Ryan Moore, who had 18 points and 13 rebounds, made two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation to put the game into overtime. Brea Olinda is 15-7, 5-1.

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 96, Northwood 90 (OT)--Jason Garey made two free throws with less than one second remaining to send the game into overtime and University (13-8, 5-1) scored the first eight points in the extra period.

Garey made seven three-pointers and had 34 points. Hiro Christoph had six three-pointers and finished with 24 points for the Trojans.

Drew Terry had 32 points and Rob Selway 25 for Northwood (16-6, 3-3).

In the Sea View League:

No. 10 Newport Harbor 52, Irvine 48--Tony Melum made two free throws with three seconds left to seal the victory for host Newport Harbor (17-5, 3-2). The Sailors led by two when Greg Perrine stole the ball with nine seconds left and then passed to Melum, who was fouled. Melum had 15 points.

Jordan Guinn had 14 points for Irvine (10-13, 1-4).

In the South Coast League:

No. 3 Capistrano Valley 65, Mission Viejo 45--Jake Franzen had 21 points for Capistrano Valley (20-2, 7-0). Guard Greg Villanueva led Mission Viejo with 14 points, including four three-pointers.

No. 4 El Toro 66, No. 10 San Clemente 60--Ashkan Nazeri scored 22 points, Matt Green added 14 points and 12 rebounds and Ken Tanaka had eight points and nine assists for the visiting Chargers (21-2, 6-1). Tim Burnette scored 18 points for San Clemente (13-7, 2-5).
