Disease Scare Halts Some Animal Exports
In another blow to Europe’s farm industry, France banned exports of animals at risk for foot-and-mouth disease as the Continent went on high alert to try to stop the virus from spreading from Britain.
After a series of false alarms, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark and France said they had no confirmed cases of the disease.
France virtually shut down its livestock business, barring the export of at-risk animals for 15 days and banning all movement of such animals inside the country, except those being taken to slaughterhouses.
