Khatami to Push for Reforms Despite Foes

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami vowed to pursue political and cultural reforms in the face of stiff opposition from Islamic hard-liners, but he left the nation guessing whether he will seek a second term.

“No pressure can make me give up this path,” Khatami said in a speech to parliament. “I cannot give up my commitment to God and the noble people. We have no choice but to succeed in establishing Islamic democracy.”
