Gardner Sparks Arizona in Upset of No. 23 Texas

Jason Gardner scored 28 points, including 14 in the final 11 minutes, to lead Arizona over No. 23 Texas, 88-74, Saturday night at Austin, Texas.

It was Arizona’s third victory over a ranked team in three games.

Texas (0-1) got 15 points each from Brandon Mouton, Royal Ivey and Sydmill Harris.

Arizona trailed, 51-39, early in the second half.

Salim Stoudamire finished with 19 points for the Wildcats, who made 26 of 31 free throws.

No. 2 Maryland 83, American 53--Lonny Baxter scored 25 points and Juan Dixon had 22 for Maryland (2-1) at College Park, Md.

It was the 244th victory at Maryland for Gary Williams, who moved into second place on the school’s career list ahead of his former coach, Bud Millikan. Lefty Driesell is the leader with 348.

No. 9 Iowa 75, Louisiana Tech 67--Reggie Evans had 22 points and Luke Recker had 17 for Iowa (3-0) at Iowa City.

No. 13 Stanford 81, New Mexico 66--Casey Jacobsen, Stanford’s only returning starter, scored 17 points in the Cardinal’s opener at Albuquerque.

Junior center Curtis Borchardt had 17 points for the Cardinal.

No. 18 Oklahoma State 81, Austin Peay 58--Maurice Baker had 29 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys (2-0) at Stillwater, Okla., in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational.

The Cowboys will go to Las Vegas to resume tournament play with three games in three days.

Chad Prewitt had 21 points and Curtis Millage had 16 as Arizona State defeated Stephen F. Austin, 92-61, in its opener at Tempe, Ariz.... Doug Wrenn had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington (2-0) over Bowling Green, 81-74, in a semifinal of the Top of the World Classic at Fairbanks, Alaska....Brian Jackson scored 22 points but Oregon State struggled past Division II Northern Colorado, 64-59, at Corvallis, Ore., in the opener for both teams.
