‘RIGHT GUARD’ TAKES ON NEW MEANING IN THIS ONE

Great Unsolved Mysteries of the NFL:

a) What does Mike Holmgren see in Matt Hasselbeck that the rest of the league, its scouts, its fans, its media and its cheerleaders do not?

b) Where did Randy Moss go?

c) Why can’t the Dolphins beat the Jets?

The Jets’ Oct. 14 victory at the Meadowlands was New York’s seventh in a row over Miami, a streak that dates to 1997. When the Dolphins last defeated the Jets, on Nov. 9, 1997, Jimmy Johnson was their coach, Dan Marino was their quarterback and Bill Parcells and Neil O’Donnell were their New York counterparts.

“They’ve made the playoffs once in 12 years, and they always do this to us,” Miami linebacker Zach Thomas ranted after the Oct. 14 loss. Like the rest of us, Thomas had no explanation other than to suggest the Dolphins were “terrible” and quite possibly “garbage.”

A month later, Thomas semi-apologized for those remarks, saying that he’s “a poor loser,” was “hot” after yet another defeat and “was just saying we stunk worse than they do.”

Well, that would have been our next guess.

The line: Miami by 6.
