Emulex Corp., a maker of data-storage networking equipment, posted a fiscal first-quarter loss Thursday, citing a lull in shipments and orders after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The Costa Mesa company said its loss for the three months ended Sept. 30 totaled $40 million, or 49 cents a share, compared with net income of $12.9 million, or 17 cents, in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue fell 4.9% to $52.7 million.

Future demand and orders are difficult to forecast in the aftermath of the attacks, Chief Executive Paul Folino said in a prepared statement.

Irvine-based CorVel Corp., a provider of managed health-care services, said net income for the second quarter increased 9% to $3.6 million, or 32 cents a share, from $3.3 million, or 28 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue gained 13% to $58.4 million.

ICU Medical Inc., a San Clemente maker of medical connectors, reported that net income for the third quarter rose 57%, to $3.3 million, or 34 cents a share, from $2.1 million, or 23 cents a share, for the year-earlier period. Sales increased 38% to $16.2 million.

Hycor Biomedical Inc., a Garden Grove manufacturer of medical diagnostic products, said net income for the third quarter fell 54% to $147,000, or 2 cents a share, from $319,000, or 4 cents a share, for the same period last year. Sales were flat at $4.1 million.

Biolase Technology Inc. in San Clemente, a manufacturer of dental and surgical products, posted third-quarter net income of $102,000, or 1 cent a share, compared with a net loss of $1.2 million, or 6 cents a share, for the comparable period last year. Sales more than doubled to $4.7 million from $2.2 million.

ChromaVision Medical Systems Inc., a San Juan Capistrano provider of automated cell-imaging systems, incurred a third-quarter net loss of $3.9 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $4 million, or 20 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose to $1.2 million from $211,581.
