Planet Hollywood International Inc. said Friday that it and 18 of its units had filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, saying the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had affected the restaurant chain’s core business.

The Orlando, Fla.-based company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that the decline in tourist travel, low hotel occupancy and cancellations of conferences and conventions after the attacks “created an untenable position for the company just as it had been reestablishing its financial footing.”

“Having locations in some of the world’s most desirable locations--Times Square, Piccadilly Circus, Champs Elysees, the Las Vegas Strip and Disney World, to name a few--has proved detrimental in a climate where customers are hesitant to visit high-profile destinations,” Planet Hollywood said.

Planet Hollywood, whose original backers included movie stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Slyvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, previously filed for Chapter 11 in 1999 and emerged from bankruptcy protection the next year.

The company said it does not intend to close any restaurants as part of its reorganization and that its plans to open outlets in Disneyland Tokyo and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, are continuing without delay.
