MILITARY FRONT
More than 100 U.S. commandos attacked the airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, opening a new phase of the war on terrorism, U.S. officials said. All the helicopters successfully left Afghan airspace, officials said. Pentagon officials later confirmed that two U.S. military personnel died in a helicopter crash in Pakistan that was part of the military operation.
INVESTIGATION
Records of two bank accounts held by suspected terrorists that could shed light on financial backers of the suicide hijackers have been discovered in Dubai. The finding came as new details emerged about $15,000 in cash transfers wired to a United Arab Emirates currency exchange on the eve of the Sept. 11 attack.
