Red Cross Leader Quits After Panel’s Criticisms
A leader of the Red Cross chapter here resigned Thursday following an independent review panel’s recommendation that he and two others be removed.
Charles Duddles said he was leaving his post as chairman of the chapter’s board of directors immediately for personal reasons.
Duddles’ resignation came after a review panel said he, chapter CEO Dodie Rotherham and Vice Chairman Rod Lanthorne should be ousted because they had lost “effectiveness and standing in the community.”
The review by the 14-member panel followed criticism of the chapter’s handling of financial aid intended for victims of the 2001 wildfire in Alpine, east of San Diego. Victims, local officials and members of the chapter’s board complained that organization leaders blocked efforts to disclose how such donations were spent and thwarted reform efforts.
