Iraq’s National Assembly has unanimously backed the nomination of Saddam Hussein, president since 1979, to run unopposed for another seven-year term in voting scheduled for October.

“The historic leadership of President Saddam Hussein will remain a thorn in the eyes of our enemies ... and this march will continue until it is consolidated by victory, end of sanctions and driving back the aggression,” the assembly said.

The U.S. has been pushing for a “regime change” in Iraq, which has been under U.N. sanctions since it invaded Kuwait in 1990.
