Shrimp Turnovers

Lent may be a time to give up favorite foods, but the season’s specialties can be as attractive as what is sacrificed. One example would be the empanadas de camarones (shrimp turnovers), a Lenten specialty at Tamales Liliana’s in East Los Angeles. Fried golden brown, with a neatly crimped edge, the empanadas contain chopped shrimp, avocado and a sweet, hot salsa that includes onion, cilantro and ketchup.

Empanadas de camarones (shrimp turnovers), $2.50 each at Tamales Liliana’s, 4619 Cesar E. Chavez Ave., Los Angeles. (323) 780-0989.
