City OKs $500,000 for Youth Initiative
Teenagers in the northeast San Fernando Valley will have more opportunities for after-school activity after a Los Angeles City Council vote Tuesday to allocate $500,000 for a new effort called the Valley Youth Initiative.
The money will provide expanded youth services through the Jeopardy Foundation. It also will pay for renovation of a gymnasium on Glenoaks Boulevard in Pacoima and expansion of a computer lab for middle school and high school students.
Funds will also allow for creation of a youth center where young people can go to receive work skills training, job placement assistance and counseling.
The Valley Youth Initiative is a five-year, $9-million job training program, administered by the city’s Housing Authority.
It is made up of a coalition that includes the UCLA Community-Based Learning Program, the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles Youth Employment and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
It shares space in the Glenoaks facility with the Jeopardy Foundation and an informal county juvenile traffic court that handles infractions by first-time offenders.
