59 Rebels Killed, Government Reports
Nepal said its troops killed an estimated 59 Maoist rebels in major operations over the last two days.
“Fresh bloodstains and marks of bodies pulled by fleeing rebels indicate that at least 50 rebels may have been killed in the battle at Khara,” a ministry statement said.
Ministry spokesman Bhupendra Prasad Poudel said nine rebels were killed elsewhere across Nepal in separate battles.
The rebels are fighting to overthrow the monarchy and establish communist rule.
More than 4,700 people have been killed in the conflict since 1996--2,800 of them in the last seven months.
