Mining Suspended After Accident Kills 42
Tanzania suspended all mining in the north of the country after 42 tanzanite miners died because of a failed oxygen pump.
Dozens of miners were trying to recover the bodies of their colleagues. Fourteen bodies had been brought up. The bodies are about 410 feet deep in the ground and 985 feet along the shaft horizontally.
Daniel Ole Njoolay, the regional commissioner for Arusha, announced the mining halt after visiting the site of Thursday’s accident in Mererani, 25 miles southeast of Arusha. Mererani is the only place in the world where tanzanite, a gemstone, is found.
