Teenager Is Hit by a Wave, Drowns

A 17-year-old Lawndale boy drowned Friday night at Dockweiler Beach when he got hit by a large wave while wading in the surf, authorities said.
Lifeguards recovered Ricardo Esteves about 15 feet from shore at about 8:20 p.m. He was transported to Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center in Hawthorne, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy within the next few days.
The boy was at the Los Angeles beach with his family, police said.
