Bakersfield’s Motto
Re “Bakersfield to Put Its Trust in God,” March 18: Bakersfield Councilwoman Jacquie Sullivan believes she’s “stand[ing] firm for what the majority believes in” by emblazoning “In God We Trust” on the walls of City Hall.
I’d like to remind Sullivan that not long ago it was the opinion of the “majority” that women should not hold public office or even be allowed to vote. Fortunately for people like Sullivan, the U.S. Constitution focuses its power on protecting the rights and beliefs of the minority. She would do well to remember that.
