The Israeli army said it found a suicide bomber’s explosive belt hidden in a Palestinian Red Crescent Society ambulance that was taking a woman and three children to the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday.

Husam Sharqawi, an official at the Palestinian Red Crescent, accused the army of trying to score propaganda points but said an inquiry would be conducted.

The army said soldiers found a bomb containing about 22 pounds of explosives sewn into a coat and crammed into the mattress of a stretcher used to carry a child.

Sharqawi said the aid group was “shocked by this incident. We are investigating all the circumstances. . . . We are willing to cooperate with any investigation.”
