President Appoints New Prime Minister
President Fradique de Menezes named a former ambassador to Portugal as prime minister of Sao Tome and Principe.
Gabriel da Costa, 45, of the minority party Change Democratic Movement, was chosen by the president, who received the names of two candidates from the legislature of the West African country.
Da Costa’s party is closely allied with the president and holds 23 of the 55 seats in parliament.
The other candidate was from the Movement for the Liberation of Sao Tome and Principe-Social Democratic Party, which holds 24 seats but agreed to share power.
