SLA Fugitive Is Freed, Rearrested in South Africa
A South African court Friday freed James Kilgore, a former member of the radical Symbionese Liberation Army accused of a 1975 bank robbery and murder in Sacramento, pending a formal extradition request to stand trial in the U.S. But he was rearrested by police after the ruling.
“It is quite shocking and strange for this court to hear there is no documentation forthcoming from the United States,” said Magistrate Hafisa Mohamed, who freed him.
But minutes later, policemen arrested Kilgore on charges of entering South Africa illegally several years ago, said his lawyer, Mike Evans.
South African police first arrested Kilgore, 55, last week at his home in a Cape Town suburb, where he had been living under the name Charles William Pape.
