A top United Nations human rights investigator said she would probe the case of hundreds of captured Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters who died while being transported last year by Northern Alliance soldiers.

The prisoners are said to have suffocated while being taken in metal containers to a jail in northern Afghanistan.

Asma Jahangir, a Pakistani lawyer whose mandate covers extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions, is on a 10-day mission to Afghanistan. She will present her findings to the U.N. Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
