Bystander Killed by Gunfire on Street

A woman bystander was killed by a stray bullet during a shooting attack in the Jefferson Park area Friday afternoon, Los Angeles police said.

Det. Lt. Don Richards said the incident, which may have been gang-related, began about 3:10 p.m. when a man stepped into the street at Jefferson Boulevard and Farmdale Avenue and started shooting at two young men in a car headed north on Farmdale.

The car turned east on Jefferson, glancing off an MTA bus and spinning out of control, Richards said.

The gunman continued to fire, police said, and a bullet aimed at the car struck a woman standing in front of a liquor store about a block east on Jefferson.

The woman, wounded in the chest, died a short time later at a nearby hospital, police said. Her name was not released.

After spinning out, the car sped west on Jefferson, police said. The gunman fired more shots, officers said, and the car crashed into a fence about a block farther west on Jefferson. Police said the gunman escaped.

The men in the car, who were not identified, were hospitalized with injuries, apparently bullet wounds, that were not thought to be life-threatening, Richards said.

The bus was not seriously damaged, and no one in it was injured, he said.
