Government Pensions
With all the cuts in services that will be necessary in the upcoming years to try to bring our state and local budgets out of the red, I am disheartened to read about pensions for government workers continuing to rise (“Pensions Straining Civic Coffers,” Sept. 5). Why should anyone receive 90% to 100% of his or her salary in retirement? Most of us have to save our money and try to budget for the future. Shouldn’t government workers have to do the same, instead of relying on taxpayers to take care of them? Yet Gov. Gray Davis was asked to sign even more measures to use our hard-earned money to enable government workers to retire young and enjoy many years of living off the taxpayers. I hope Davis will help curb this waste.
