Suspect in Stabbings Arrested After Standoff

Two San Francisco police detectives were stabbed Monday in nearby Daly City by a taxi driver suspected of having shot a woman and her 3-year-child with a pellet gun, detectives said.

The taxi driver, Jerry Cabonce, 41, fled to the home he shares with his parents after the knife attack, police said. He remained barricaded there for more than two hours while negotiators tried to contact him, Daly City Police Capt. John Warren said.

Heavily armed officers eventually broke into the back of the house, where they found Cabonce hiding in a bedroom under some covers, Warren said.

Cabonce had been firing random shots from a pellet gun Monday morning as he drove his cab along the 800 block of Powell Street in the exclusive Nob Hill section of San Francisco, police said.

Pellets struck the woman and child, who were walking along the street, before the taxi sped away, according to police, although the pair weren’t seriously wounded.

Officers Pat Correa, 51, and Lea Militello, 44, working as plainclothes detectives, used information from witnesses to trace the cab to the driver’s house in Daly City, where they found the taxi parked outside.

Police said the two officers decided to impound the vehicle and were waiting for a tow truck about 3 p.m. when Cabonce burst out the front door of the house and attacked them with a knife. Correa fired her gun twice, but both shots missed Cabonce. He then barricaded himself inside the house.

Correa was in serious but stable condition Monday night at a San Francisco hospital, where doctors treated her for a severe chest wound, said Dewayne Tully, a Police Department spokesman. Militello was admitted to the hospital, but her injuries were not as serious.
