Lost Trio Gets By Kennedy Airport Security
A man and two boys who became lost while fishing washed ashore at John F. Kennedy International Airport, breaching security as they wandered around near a runway as planes departed and arrived, authorities said Tuesday.
Security measures were immediately stepped up after the trio walked across the property undetected Sunday night, said Port Authority spokesman Pasquale Difulco.
“The fact they were able to do this is of great concern to us,” Difulco said.
He said a 21-year-old man and two 13-year-old boys were fishing on an inflatable raft in Jamaica Bay when a sudden storm blew in. They became lost on the water, and wound up coming aground at the southeast corner of the airport, Difulco said.
They walked for about a mile until they reached a police building, where they told the officers their story. The three were questioned and released when their story checked out; police found their boat and their fishing poles along the airport’s 10-mile perimeter, Difulco said.
The three arrived at the police building about 10:30 p.m.
Security at Kennedy has become an increasing concern since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers on Sept. 11.
In February, airport officials began enforcing a rule that banned public parking within 300 feet of any terminal buildings.
