Meguial Might Be Singled Out

Those looking for quality won’t find it on today’s card at Santa Anita.

Four of the eight races are for maiden claimers and there is only one non-claiming race.

What fans will find is a healthy pick-six carry-over of $153,455, thanks to upsets Sunday.

Those looking for a single in the sequence, the final half-dozen races, might zero in on Meguial.

A 4-year-old, Argentine-bred daughter of Roy, Meguial, owned by David Lanzman and trained by Doug O’Neill, will be making her U.S. debut in the seventh, a $56,000 allowance at one mile. The race was originally scheduled for the turf, but wet weather prompted the surface switch.

Scheduled to race with Lasix for the first time, Meguial finished second or third in three consecutive Group I’s in her native country and has trained well at Hollywood Park, prepping for her first outing since last Oct. 5. Leading rider Patrick Valenzuela has the mount.

Of the other eight horses scheduled to run, only four show main-track victories. Canta Bonita broke her maiden on the dirt in Argentina over a year ago, Sweet Frippery beat $50,000 maidens last summer at Del Mar, Tifonica won at Golden Gate Fields against a weak field of maidens last month, and Stonebridge Lady won here as a 2-year-old in December 2001.

Race of the day: Affirmed Success and Say Florida Sandy, a pair of 9-year-olds who have won 47 races and more than $4.2 million, head the field in today’s eighth at Aqueduct. The $54,000 allowance at six furlongs is the final leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $40,396. Bettors will be able to play the Aqueduct pick six at Santa Anita.

Who’s hot: Eibar Coa. The jockey leads the standings at Gulfstream Park against a strong colony that includes John Velasquez, Jerry Bailey, Edgar Prado, Pat Day and Jorge Chavez.

Who’s not: William White. The trainer lost with 39 of his first 41 starters at Gulfstream.

Exotically speaking: A trifecta in the eighth using Miss Corrine and Runbeforethewind in the first two spots and all in the third.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/116. Money: Previous day/meet total: $8.80/$678.20. Total money bet: $770.
