State’s Business Climate

Regarding tuition fees going up by 25% and 30% in the University of California and the California State University systems (“Cal State, UC Back Steep Hikes in Fees,” July 17): Perhaps the students will learn a valuable lesson on life in California.

I run a small landscape business and recently received my general liability insurance quote, which contained a 60% increase. My workers’ compensation insurance has tripled, going from 7% of payroll to 22% in less than three years. Landscaping is an industry full of unlicensed competitors who hire illegal aliens. Sometimes I wonder how I can stay in business at all. Is it any wonder that our governor is being recalled?
