Voter Registration Through the DMV
Re “Voters Must Register by Today to Cast Ballots Oct. 7,” Sept. 22: Today, after voting in every California election since I could vote, I discovered that I was no longer registered and would miss this special election. Why? Simple. I registered through the Department of Motor Vehicles when I recently moved to Riverside County. The DMV says that it will register you automatically. It didn’t!
And it didn’t surprise the registrar in Riverside when I called to inquire about my registration status. “They are not doing their job very well,” she said.
It’s no wonder that the citizens of California look at the DMV with derision and contempt. I’m disappointed in the department, but more so in myself for ever believing that it would do what it said it would.
