Cubs Win Again Behind Wood, 3-0

Kerry Wood struck out nine and yielded only four singles in seven innings Saturday at Wrigley Field, beating the New York Mets, 3-0, and giving the Chicago Cubs their fifth consecutive victory.

Wood (3-1) has given up only four earned runs in his last three starts, a 1.60 earned-run average. He walked two and hit one in his first scoreless outing of the season, allowing only three runners in scoring position.

Wood recorded nine consecutive outs at one point, starting the run by picking off Kazuo Matsui when he tried to steal second with no outs in the sixth inning.

The Mets had runners at first and third with one out in the sixth, but he struck out Shane Spencer and Karim Garcia.

Houston 8, Colorado 5 -- Roger Clemens tied Gaylord Perry for 15th place on the all-time win list at 314, leading the Astros at Coors Field. Clemens improved to 4-0 for the second consecutive season, striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings to raise his career total to 4,125, third behind Nolan Ryan (5,714) and Steve Carlton (4,136).

Philadelphia 7, Montreal 0 -- Randy Wolf (1-1) homered, hit an RBI double and pitched a four-hitter at Montreal.

The Expos (4-14) have scored 32 runs, the fourth-lowest total through 18 games in major league history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, ahead of only the 1907 Brooklyn Superbas (20), the 1909 Washington Senators (28) and the 1966 Kansas City Athletics (31).

Milwaukee 3, St. Louis 1 -- At Milwaukee, Chris Saenz gave up two hits over six innings to win his major league debut. The 22-year-old right-hander was called up Friday from double-A Huntsville.

Florida 7, Atlanta 4 -- Jeff Conine hit a two-run homer at Atlanta to help the Marlins beat the Braves for the first time in five tries. Conine’s first homer came off Mike Hampton (0-2).

Cincinnati 9, Pittsburgh 7 -- D’Angelo Jimenez, who entered the game with one hit in 29 at-bats, homered and drove in three runs and the Reds rallied from four runs down at Pittsburgh.

San Diego 4, Arizona 2 -- Ryan Klesko hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the ninth inning at Phoenix. With one out, Mark Loretta hit an infield single off Oscar Villarreal (0-1). Brian Giles followed with a single. Klesko then doubled into the right-field corner.
