Fiscal Follies

Share

As L.A. County looks to cut back services -- and county jobs -- by massive amounts, we find buried in “L.A. County Calling for More Cuts” (April 20) a brief reference to the fact that a 2.5% raise will take effect anyhow, because the county has not declared a fiscal emergency. It is unfortunate and shortsighted that county officials and unions would prefer to save salary increases for more-senior employees at the expense of junior employees and public services. On a much lesser scale, this is the same type of thinking (“Let’s wait until a real crisis occurs, then maybe we’ll do something”) that allowed the successful attack on 9/11.
