Burbank’s Woo Advances in Junior Championship
Grace Woo of Burbank won her first two matches Wednesday in the 56th U.S. Girls’ Junior golf championship at Mira Vista Golf Club in Fort Worth to advance to the round of 16 today. Woo easily handled Mallory Blackwelder of Versailles, Ky., 6 and 5, in her afternoon match.
Other Southland players advancing were Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach, Esther Choe of La Quinta, Sooji Cho of Glendale, Selanee Henderson of Apple Valley and Jane Park of Rancho Cucamonga.
In the 57th U.S. Junior Amateur boys’ championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Kyle Takesue of Cerritos beat James Dalthorp III of Los Angeles, 4 and 3, and Sihwan Kim of Fullerton defeated Ben Fox of Studio City, 2 and 1.
Seann Harlingten of Rancho Mirage advanced, 3 and 2, over Toby Ragland of Jacksonville, Fla.
Lucas Lee of Los Angeles fell in 19 holes and Rickie Fowler of Murrieta lost, 2 and 1.
Tennis
Amanda Fink of Calabasas and Sarah Fansler of Laguna Niguel advanced to the fifth round of play with victories Wednesday at the USTA National Clay Court girls’ 18-and-under division championships in Memphis, Tenn.
In the boys’ 18 championships at Rockville, Md., Andrew Eklov of Manhattan Beach advanced to the fifth round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jonathan Boym of Marlboro, N.J., and Stefan Hardy of Santa Maria fell in fourth-round play .
Baseball
Ryan Babineau, an All-Inland Empire catcher from Etiwanda, has committed to UCLA, becoming the second Southland recruit in two days to commit to new Coach John Savage’s program.
