No Charges in Rapist’s Registration Lapse
A serial rapist who was California’s second graduate of a mandatory treatment program for sex offenders won’t be charged for failing to register with the state, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said Monday.
Cary Verse, 33, was arrested Thursday at a San Jose motel for failing to update his registration every 90 days as required. Police said he was three days late.
But Karyn Sinunu, of the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office, said Verse “followed the spirit of the law” when he told police on April 19 that his room had been assigned a new number. Apparently, the motel renumbered its rooms.
“He’s done everything to stay in compliance,” Sinunu said.
