MGM’s “Dogville” opened in nine theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday. Lars Von Trier’s Depression-era drama grossed a total of $90,000 for a $10,000 per screen average. “I’m happy with those numbers,” said Tom Ortenberg, president of Lions Gate Releasing. “The film is a lightning rod -- people either love it or hate it. Because it’s set in the U.S., some think that the ‘power corrupts’ message is directed specifically at Americans.” The company plans to open the movie in about 200 theaters before the end of the run.
