Gold-fashioned way

Gilded pleasures don’t have to be brassy to be classy. The latest offerings in gold tabletop accent pieces take a sophisticated turn, toning down the glitz by referencing the history of art and interior design. Nima Oberoi, head of the San Francisco-based accessories firm Lunares, takes a flight of fancy with a Renaissance-style cherub’s wing on a stark steel mount, $180, and a hammered candlestick that echoes the early 20th century sculpture of Constantin Brancusi, $135. Both of the Oberoi-designed pieces, which have a satisfying heft, are plated in 14-karat gold and are available at Zipper, 8316 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles; (323) 951-0620. The store also stocks dessert plates with a 19th century French damask wallpaper print, a set of four for $40. For the cost-conscious, Isaac Mizrahi’s porcelain serving platter with a golden starburst-patterned rim emulates the neoclassicism of 1950s designs by the Italian illustrator Piero Fornasetti. It’s $19.99 at Target.
