Although Southern California congressional districts are among the leaders in a district-by-district list of numbers of employees in the arts, entertainment, publishing, advertising and related fields, two New York districts snagged the top spots.

According to a report released Tuesday by Americans for the Arts, a research and lobbying organization, New York’s 14th District -- a Manhattan and Queens area represented by Democrat Carolyn B. Maloney -- easily topped the list with 119,320 such jobs, followed by New York’s 8th District.

In third place is the Los Angeles Westside district represented by Democrat Henry A. Waxman, with 64,512 jobs. Democrat Adam B. Schiff’s district, in the area from Pasadena to Burbank, was in fifth place, followed by sixth place for Democrat Howard L. Berman’s east San Fernando Valley district.

Other high-ranking Southern California districts were Diane Watson’s in central L.A. (9th), Brad Sherman’s in the southwest San Fernando Valley (12th), Jane Harman’s in the South Bay (16th) and Christopher Cox’s in Newport Beach (19th). All are Democrats except Cox, who is a Republican.

Nationwide, 2.965 million jobs in the arts and related fields make up 2.2% of all the jobs in the country, according to the report. Every congressional district has at least 1,500 such jobs, it said.

The point, said Robert L. Lynch, president of Americans for the Arts, is that beyond their intrinsic value, “arts-centric businesses contribute significantly to local economies in all U.S. congressional districts.”
