Lavalas to Field Two Candidates for President

Ousted Haitian leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s political party registered two candidates for the nation’s presidential election this year.
Aristide’s Lavalas party, which many political analysts had expected would easily win if it kept a united front, split after authorities rejected the registration of popular priest Gerard Jean-Juste because he was in jail. Its two candidates are a former senator, Gerald Gilles, and a former World Bank official, Marc Louis Bazin.
In all, more than 50 candidates registered.
