Military Deaths

As of Friday, the Department of Defense reported a total of 2,645 American military deaths as a result of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The department last week identified the following military personnel killed in Iraq:

Salem Bachar, 20, of Chula Vista, Calif.; corporal, Marine Corps. Bachar was one of two Marines killed in action Thursday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Scott M. Bandhold, 37, of North Merrick, N.Y.; specialist, Army. Bandhold was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Misiab, near Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Joseph A. Blanco, 25, of Bloomington, Calif.; corporal, Army. Blanco was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle and they were then attacked with small-arms fire in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Roland E. Calderon Ascenio, 21, of Miami; private first class, Army. Calderon Ascenio was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee in Misiab, near Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

David S. Collins, 24, of Jasper, Ga.; specialist, Army. Collins was one of two soldiers who died after a roadside bomb exploded April 9 near their Humvee in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

James F. Costello III, 27, of St. Louis; private first class, Army. Costello was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle and they were then attacked with small-arms fire in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Shawn R. Creighton, 21, of Windsor, N.C.; specialist, Army. Creighton was killed April 8 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Stryker vehicle in Rawah, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

James W. Gardner, 22, of Glasgow, Ky.; specialist, Army. Gardner died of a non-combat-related gunshot wound Monday in Tall Afar, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Marcus S. Glimpse, 22, of Huntington Beach; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Glimpse was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device detonated at the security checkpoint where he was deployed in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Kenneth D. Hess, 26, of Asheville, N.C.; specialist, Army. Hess was killed Tuesday by a suicide bomber while on foot patrol in Rawah, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Wainwright, Alaska.

Randall L. Lamberson, 36, of Springfield, Mo.; sergeant first class, Army. Lamberson was one of two soldiers who died after a roadside bomb exploded April 9 near their Humvee in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He died of his injuries April 10 in Balad, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Joseph I. Love, 22, of North Pole, Alaska; private first class, Army. Love was killed April 9 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee during a convoy in Balad, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 94th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), 8th Sustainment Command (Theater) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Philip J. Martini, 24, of Lansing, Ill.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Martini was killed by a sniper April 8 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Jody W. Missildine, 19, of Plant City, Fla.; private, Army. Missildine was killed April 8 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee during a convoy in Tall Afar, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Friedberg, Germany.

Juana Navarro Arellano, 24, of Ceres, Calif.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Navarro Arellano was killed April 8 while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. She was assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

Eric A. Palmisano, 27, of Florence, Wis.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Palmisano was killed April 2 when the truck he was riding in rolled over in a flash flood near Al Asad, west of Baghdad. Six other Marines and a Navy petty officer also died. Palmisano had been listed as “duty status whereabouts unknown” until his body was recovered Tuesday. He was assigned to the 1st Transportation Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Stephen J. Perez, 22, of San Antonio; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Perez was one of two Marines killed in action Thursday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

George R. Roehl Jr., 21, of Manchester, N.H.; private first class, Army. Roehl was among three soldiers killed Tuesday when a roadside bomb exploded near their Bradley fighting vehicle and they were then attacked with small-arms fire in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Gregory S. Rogers, 42, of Cincinnati; sergeant first class, Army. Rogers was killed April 9 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee during a convoy in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Bryan N. Taylor, 20, of Milford, Ohio; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Taylor died April 6 after being shot by an Iraqi army soldier on a coalition base near Al Qaim, near the Syrian border. Taylor was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Andrew K. Waits, 23, of Waterford, Mich.; specialist, Army. Waits was killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Richard P. Waller, 22, of Fort Worth; corporal, Marine Corps. Waller was killed by a sniper April 7 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
