The new archbishop of Warsaw denied media accusations that he spied for Poland’s former communist rulers, saying he was the victim of a smear campaign after his recent nomination by Pope Benedict XVI.

The pontiff named Bishop Stanislaw Wielgus on Dec. 6 to succeed anti-communist crusader Cardinal Jozef Glemp. He is expected to officially take the post in January.
