Indonesia overturned the terrorism conviction of militant Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir after he served 2 1/2 years for conspiracy in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people.

Supreme Court Chief Judge German Hoediarto said he had heard testimony from 30 witnesses but gave no details.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he was upset for relatives of the 88 Australian victims but noted that those directly responsible for the bombings had been convicted.
