A man who jumped into the Yuba River to save his dog has been declared missing, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Department.

Samuel Newman, 36, of Sacramento was last seen about 3:45 p.m. Saturday more than a mile and a half east of Buttermilk Bend on the south fork of the Yuba River near Bridgeport.

A friend told authorities that Newman had entered the water to rescue his dog and was swept away. A California Highway Patrol helicopter searching the area found Newman’s dog on a hillside downstream.
