An ‘Idol’ show of sensitivity in wake of tragedy

Share

“American Idol” did not, in fact, miss an opportunity last week to “channel emotion” toward the hurting hearts in Virginia and the whole country [“A Missed Opportunity to Honor Victims,” by Randy Lewis, April 19]. On Wednesday night’s results show, guest country artist Martina McBride sang “Anyway” -- her new single that is an anthem of hope amid pain and loss: “God is great, but sometimes life ain’t good. And when I pray, it doesn’t always turn out like I think it should. But I do it anyway.” The song was a touching tribute to all of Monday’s victims and just the kind of communication you asked for in last Thursday’s column.

You can’t really have expected all of the amateur singers, the orchestra, the producers, etc. to rework an hour telecast at the last minute. But “American Idol” did, indeed, come through. And you didn’t have to be a country music fan to appreciate the power of McBride’s well-chosen song. It was perfect.

Randy, it’s a TV show -- not a forum for news events. You must get a life. Let us enjoy a few minutes of fun before we have to go back to what’s happening in the world.
