No. 9 Cougars manage to get past Beavers

Mac Hopson’s jump shot with 35.5 seconds left put Washington State ahead for good, and the No. 9 Cougars held off Oregon State, 58-54, on Saturday night at Corvallis, Ore.

Washington State (23-5, 12-5 Pacific 10 Conference) trailed by as many as eight points in the second half but pulled ahead when Aron Baynes scored eight consecutive points to give the Cougars a 47-45 lead.

The Beavers (11-19, 3-14) tied the score at 54-54 on Wesley Washington’s layup with 1:02 left. The Cougars regained the lead on Hopson’s jumper.

After Oregon State’s Josh Tarver missed a three-point attempt, Baynes made two free throws with 8.7 seconds left.

No. 23 Oregon 93, Washington 85 -- Aaron Brooks scored 30 points and Tajuan Porter had 19 to lead the Ducks (22-7, 10-7) past the Huskies (16-12, 6-10) at Eugene, Ore.

Oregon was coming off a 64-59 win over ninth-ranked Washington State on Thursday that ended a three-game losing streak. Brooks came within two points of his season high.
